Step 5: Vertical Rebar

Ensure that rebar is correctly set in the footing and extends properly above footings for non-contact laps in walls. The vertical dowels should extend beyond the top of the footing by at least 20 to 25 inches. That amount may be more depending on the lap requirements, as well as seismic and wind load ratings. Rebar inside concrete must be 3 inches from any soil exposure.
