What are ICFs?

Hollow panels filled with concrete that are put together using mortar. Insulation is added later.

Panels made from rigid insulation, such as EPS foam, that are bonded together through embedded webbing or ties.

A mix of foam beads and a slurry concrete mix that is molded to the shape of large blocks that interlock together.

What are the basic components of ICFs?

How do you build with ICFs?

Fill each form with concrete then stack in the shape of the outsides walls of your building. Add rebar as needed.

Stack blocks in the shape of the walls, add concrete, and then remove when finished.

Keep laying blocks in a circular pattern and fill with concrete. Use a chain saw to cut holes where windows and doors are needed after the concrete is poured.

Stack ICF forms together, cut where needed, and interlock and offset at least 12” row to row. Add horizontal and vertical rebar as specified, buck and brace openings, and attach a bracing and alignment system. The forms stay in place after they are filled with concrete.

Stack one block on top of another one and glue each block together with vertical seams between each block.

Why are ICFs strong?

ICF forms are made from dense EPS foam and strong plastic webs, but the strength comes from the steel reinforced concrete.

ICF forms are made from concrete and use fibers to make them stronger than CMUs.

ICFs use a mixture of foam and concrete together to make strong blocks that are grouted together like big cinder blocks.

The strength in ICFs come from the dense plastic webs that tie the blocks together. The concrete and steel aren’t even necessary.

What is thermal mass?

Mass created from heat

Consumption of a consumable hydrocarbon that is burned to create heat

The thermal inertia of the concrete is slow to change temperature and is also insulated from both internal and external temperatures
